Public Meeting on Anacostia River Clean Up Activities

Last Date:

Details:

In March 2016, the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) released the Anacostia River Sediment Project Draft Phase 1 Remedial Investigation Report, representing a significant milestone in the District’s efforts to address contamination in the Anacostia River. The goal of the remedial investigation is to confirm the extent and location of contamination in the river, and to evaluate the risks to human health and the environment.

The investigation confirmed some issues of which the Department was already aware. For example, it is not safe to eat fish from the river; it is not safe to swim in the river; and there are multiple areas of heavy contamination in the river, possibly from activities that occurred decades ago. However, the investigation also revealed new evidence of recent and/or ongoing contamination, and identified some areas requiring further investigation.

The Draft Phase I Remedial Investigation Report is now available for public review and comment. As part of DOEE’s commitment to promoting open dialogue and keeping the public informed throughout the life of this project, the agency will hold a public meeting on April 20 to present the report’s findings and to provide an update on current and future clean-up activities.
