Habitat Restoration - Kingman Lake 2.0

<< Back to Habitat Restoration main page

Project Location:  Ward 7. Kingman Lake is a semi-enclosed portion of the tidal Anacostia River. See the map of the three sections of the lake- Upper Kingman Lake, Central Kingman Lake, and Lower Kingman Lake.

Project Status: DOEE has contracted with EA Engineering, and the project is currently under design and undergoing National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance. This project is a partnership between DOEE and the National Park Service – National Capital Parks East (NACE). Funding for this project is provided by a 2020 National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Chesapeake Small Watershed Grant and District Stream and Wetland Restoration Funding.

Project Overview: Sedimentation due to over 300 years of development, toxic contamination, eutrophication, and invasion of exotic species has led to the deterioration of Kingman Lake. Through this project, DOEE is proposing a variety of wetland restoration and enhancement strategies including tidal wetlands, submerged aquatic vegetation, freshwater mussel beds, and invasive plant management.

Through the Anacostia River Sediment Project, DOEE has identified multiple hotspots of sediment with PCB contamination in Kingman Lake. DOEE plans to coordinate the timing of the remediation work and wetland restoration activities.

Project Objectives:

  • Enhancing resiliency
  • Restoring habitat for species such as American Black Duck, Striped Bass, River Herring, American Shad and various freshwater mussel species
  • Improving water quality
  • Enhancing public access/recreation
