Overnight Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience

Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences

For 5th grade students:

DOEE has recently restructured and expanded its Overnight MWEE program to reach all District fifth-grade students attending public schools.

Local watersheds and the Chesapeake Bay will provide the context for teaching fifth-grade science standards that cover scientific inquiry; movement of water through the water cycle (earth science); and inheritance in living organisms, adaptation, and survival (life science). The Overnight MWEE program includes outdoor activities and project-based experiences that collect and analyze data.

The Overnight MWEE program includes:

  • Three-day, two-night overnight field study that engages students in environmental education programming (watershed and sustainability lessons) and team-building activities (climbing wall, ropes course, canoeing)
  • Two classroom visits (before and after the field study) from DOEE partner non-governmental organization (NGO) professional environmental educators
  • All program fees, food, lodging, and transportation costs
  • Additional watershed education resources, such as watershed maps, water quality test kits, lesson plans, classroom demonstration tools and materials, posters, and supplementary curricula upon request

Overnight MWEE Sites

DOEE has partnered with three NGOs to provide Overnight MWEEs for students.  Participating schools will visit one of the sites operated by one of the following providers:
