Healthy Homes Month

Each June, DOEE joins national and local partners in celebrating Healthy Homes Month to raise awareness of the connection between housing and health, and to empower District residents to protect themselves from hazards in their home.

Tips and Tools for Creating a Healthy Home

Are you aware of hazards in your home that could be affecting your and/or your children’s health? DOEE’s Lead-Safe and Healthy Housing Division will be discussing home issues that can cause lead poisoning, asthma, or injuries. We will also provide you with tips and tools for creating a healthier home.

Did you know that the chemicals used to kill pests and rodents can affect your health, especially the health of individuals with asthma? What can you do if you have an infestation but want to avoid polluting your air indoor? You can use a common-sense stepwise approach called Integrated Pest Management. DC Health Talks Bed Bugs

Get the 411 about bed bugs from the expert. DC Health will teach you how to identify bed bugs and provide non-toxic methods to get rid of them.

Lead Pipe Replacement Program

Tuesday, June 15, 2021, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
No amount of lead in your drinking water is safe! Are you aware that the process of removing only a portion of a lead pipe can disturb flakes of lead that had previously settled at the bottom of the pipe?
This can result in acute exposure to lead. The removal of lead pipes must be done with extreme care. Attend this event to learn about the District’s Lead Pipe Replacement Assistance Program (LPRAP).

Lead Reduction Program

Thursday, June 17, 2021, 11:00 AM – 11:30 AM
No amount of lead exposure is healthy for a child. Even low levels of lead exposure can lead to learning disabilities and behavioral problems in children. If your home was built before 1978 and there is a child under the age of 6 in your household, you may be eligible to participate in DOEE’s Lead Reduction Program to eliminate lead hazards in your home. Register here.
