Anacostia River: Educational Motorized Boat Tours

Join Anacostia River Explorers to learn about the Anacostia River’s history, wildlife, the environmental threats it faces, and the solutions helping it realize its full potential. These guided educational motorboat and canoe tours launch from various locations up and down the Anacostia River. The district’s disposable bag fee funds free public tours. On the partner's website, you can sign up for a free public tour that's open to the community. For private tours, contact the partner directly for pricing and scheduling.

How to sign up?  Contact DOEE’s partners listed below to schedule a tour. One and two hour educational tours are available. Life jackets are provided.

Who can go on Anacostia River Explorers? Pretty much anyone no matter their age, ability, or language is welcome on the motorized tours. Tours for minors (K – 12), individuals with disabilities, and those needing translation services are available, but may require special arrangements.

How many people can go on the tour? Each tour can take roughly 12 -20 people at a time.

How much does it cost? Public tours are free.

Anacostia River Explorers educates the public about the Anacostia River including its human and natural history, the threats it faces, and what solutions are being undertaken to help the River realize its full potential as an invaluable asset for the District and its residents.

You can also complete a litter cleanup from a kayak or canoe with Anacostia Green Boats!

Living Classrooms hosts free opportunities to paddle and clean the river during the summer months. This is a citizen science program focused on collecting marine debris from the Anacostia River. We'll weigh it, count it, and measure the volume of the various types of trash we collect while paddling. The data you help us obtain is critical to informing policy and education focused on reducing litter.
