The environment is intrinsically tied to public health. And so, at DOEE, our work revolves around maintaining the health and safety of our residents. From assessing environmental risks in air quality to keeping our rivers and water clean to providing energy assistance to those in need, DOEE works tirelessly to protect our local environment and ensure that District residents have the resources they need to incorporate environmentally friendly practices in their day-to-day activities.
Arsenic
Exposure to higher than average levels of arsenic happens mostly in the workplace near hazardous waste sites, or in areas with high natural levels. Arsenic is a powerful poison.
Asbestos Abatement
The Asbestos Abatement Program ensures that asbestos removal contractors protect their own health and safety, and the health and safety of building occupants and the general public.
Lead and Healthy Housing
For thousands of years, lead has proven to be a very useful substance. For nearly as long, we have also known that exposure to lead causes serious adverse health effects.
Lead Pipe Replacement and Safer Drinking Water
The District aims to restore and protect the surface and ground waters of the District of Columbia.

Radon
Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless gas that comes from deposits of uranium in soil, rock and water. Prolonged exposure to elevated levels of radon can be harmful when found in homes.
Engine Anti-Idling Law
Motor vehicles are the largest source of emissions that originate in the District. Vehicle exhaust contaminates the air with pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and soot.
