From May 1-5, 2023, DOEE will celebrate Air Quality Awareness Week. The theme this year is “Working Together for Clean Air”! Check out the Mayor’s Proclamation.
Stay tuned for videos and tips on how we’re working to keep our air clean and what you can do too.
- To kick off Air Quality Awareness Week, we’ll be hosting an event at Annie's Ace Hardware in Brookland on Saturday, April 29 from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm with our friends Clean Air Partners. Come see the Backyard Bubble and learn about hidden backyard clean air hazards. You can also enter for your chance to win green lawn tools! And if you missed us on Saturday, on Sunday, April 30, we’ll be at the Petworth Ace Hardware from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Clean Air Partners and the backyard bubble!
- On Wednesday, May 4, we’ll announce the prizes for the 2023 DOEE Student Air Quality Art & Comic Contest! DOEE, in partnership with DDOT, invites 9th - 12th graders attending a public high school or public charter high school in the District to submit 2-D artwork that celebrates and portrays a clean air future in the District. The contest ends Friday, May 19 and winners will be announced at a public gallery exhibition showcasing student artwork on Saturday, June 10. Contest details, rules, and information will be posted at: DOEE Contests.
-
Also, on Wednesday, May 4, DOEE will launch its updated interactive air quality trends report on the District's Open Data Portal.
-
On Tuesday, May 2 and Thursday, May 4, we’ll be handing out magnets with the Air Quality Index (AQI) on them at some of our local metro stops! The AQI uses color codes to report how clean or bad the air is and recommends how to plan your activities depending on the air. Residents and visitors of the District are encouraged to regularly check the AQI to be aware of the air conditions in the area.
