District Seeks Input to Help Government Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

District Department of the Environment (DDOE) to host First Forum in November 2010

WASHINGTON, DC – District residents are invited to participate in the first public discourse on Mayor Adrian M. Fenty’s draft climate action plan for the District of Columbia. The 50- page report titled, “The Climate of Opportunity: A Climate Action Plan for the District of Columbia,” identifies specific actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Government Operations, which is responsible for approximately 720,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) annually.  The District Government is committed reducing its emissions of greenhouse gases responsible for climate change by 20% by 2012 and 30% by 2020.

What:  The District Department of the Environment (DDOE) will host a public forum on the Climate Report draft. DDOE staff will present an overview of the draft plan, field questions from the public, and listen to recommendations on how the District Government can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its operations, promote sustainable growth, and create jobs and new markets for renewable energy, alternative fuel vehicles and efficient buildings.  The public’s suggestions  will help shape the final Government Operations Climate Action Plan.

Additional public meetings and working sessions focusing on community-wide emissions reduction targets as well as recommended actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are currently being planned.
