Retroactive Discount on Stormwater Fee Discount Ending Soon

Wednesday, May 27, 2015

Apply before July 31, 2015 to receive a Retroactive Discount on DDOE’s Stormwater Fee using a Simple Application

The deadline to apply for retroactive Stormwater Fee discounts is July 31, 2015. Through the District Department of the Environment (DDOE)’s RiverSmart Rewards program, District properties with rain barrels, rain gardens, green roofs and pervious pavers, can receive discounts on a DC Water bill calculated back to the date of installation or May 1, 2009, whichever date is later.  Retroactive discounts are only available to properties eligible to use the program’s Simple Application. Most RiverSmart Homes participants will qualify to use the Simple Application.

DDOE debuted the Simple Application last summer in an effort to streamline the process for properties with simple green infrastructure. This easier form provides an additional incentive for properties to install and maintain green infrastructure through RiverSmart Homes or one of DDOE’s other financial incentive programs.

RiverSmart Rewards provides a discount of up to 55 percent off the Stormwater Fee for installing green infrastructure practices that retain stormwater. Properties are charged the fee on their DC Water bill. Those properties that are approved for a RiverSmart Rewards discount will automatically be enrolled in DC Water’s Clean Rivers Impervious Area Charge (IAC) Incentive Program, which offers a discount of up to four percent on the IAC, also assessed on the DC Water bill. Eligible GI practices for both programs include rain gardens, rain barrels, green roofs, and permeable pavement.

Properties that manage more than 2,000 square feet of impervious surface must use the Standard Application to apply for a discount. Properties required to submit a Standard Application are no longer eligible to receive a retroactive discount.

Both the Simple and the Standard Applications are available. Information on DDOE’s other stormwater incentive programs are also available at Get RiverSmart!
