Washington, DC – Several thousand District residents visited the Walter E. Washington Convention Center today for the annual Joint Utility Discount Day (JUDD) – an opportunity to apply for discounts and financial assistance on all of their utility bills at a single location.

“As our economy recovers, we don’t want anyone to have to choose between food and heat,” said Mayor Fenty. “I’m proud that we’re helping more residents with their bills year after year.”

In Fiscal Year 2009 (ending September 30), the District gave energy assistance to more than 33,000 households, nearly 16,000 of which were east of the Anacostia River. The total distributed was $20.1 million.

At JUDD, residents were able to begin the process of applying for energy assistance in the next fiscal year. The District Department of the Environment (DDOE) and the major area utility companies also offered home weatherization services and discounts on their electric, natural gas, water and telephone bills.

“Even though today’s the type of day to leave the windows open and enjoy a nice breeze, heating season is coming soon enough,” said George Hawkins, Director of the District Department of the Environment (DDOE). “We’re here to make sure our low-income residents are ready.”

DDOE partnered with the Public Service Commission, the Office of the People’s Counsel, Pepco, Washington Gas, the DC Water and Sewer Authority and Verizon to put the event together.
