Youth Bicycle Education Clinics and Ride Grant Program

Youth Bicycle Education Clinics and Ride Grant Program

<< Back to Outreach & Education main page

The Youth Bicycle Education Clinics and Ride Grant Program is providing youth all over the District with a hands-on education of bike riding from start to finish. Our participants learn how to build a bicycle, practice safe riding procedures, and then hit the road with instructors to learn how to navigate the District’s biking infrastructure and find new places in their own backyard to explore. Our grantee also supports community bike rides to celebrate our participants’ leaning and show what community support for micromobility looks like. Our participants even build bikes specifically to donate to local organizations, giving them a personal stake in seeing positive change directly within their own communities.

Why it matters: Increasing use of micromobility is one of the best ways the District can reduce transportation-related emissions. And fostering a new affinity for bike riding in younger generations means more DC residents opting for better forms of transportation long into the future. Many of the participants in the program have never learned how to ride a bike or never knew that biking was even an option for them. By participating in these educational clinics, they are developing increased levels of riding confidence and taking ownership of their part for a better future.

Get Involved: If you know of a local organization or young residents in the District that would like to participate in future clinics, contact DOEE’s Clean Transportation & Infrastructure Branch at email [email protected].

Pop-up Bike Shops

DC SEP’s pop-up bike shops are an effort for DC residents, specifically east of the Anacostia, to get their bikes fixed so they can start riding! Through research, SEP staff found out that there is a shortage in bike shops east of the Anacostia River. In efforts to assist with this local shortage, the DOEE formed a partnership with “Gearin up Bicycles” to launch at least 3 bike shops per year for the residents East of the Anacostia River.
