With an unwavering dedication to public service, Interim Senior Deputy Director Michael Somersall brings over 21 years of extensive experience in the public sector, spanning roles in both city and state government.
His previous position as the Associate Director for the Rail Safety & Emergency Response Division was pivotal, wherein he provided exemplary leadership and oversight in strict adherence to Federal and District regulations.
Demonstrating proficiency in budget management, effective communication and leadership, Mr. Somersall played a key role in establishing the District of Columbia’s State Rail Safety Participation Program and contributed to the development of budgeting templates for the Rail Safety & Emergency Response Division. His tenure as the State Safety Oversight Program Manager at the Georgia Department of Transportation showcased his instrumental role in coordinating and implementing national-level policies, resulting in the State Safety Oversight Program achieving Federal Transit Administration certification ahead of schedule.
Throughout his diverse roles, Mr. Somersall consistently exhibited a steadfast commitment to serving the residents of the respective jurisdictions, earning commendations and awards for his exceptional performance and leadership.
In alignment with his leadership ethos and dedication to the residents of the District of Columbia, Mr. Somersall is a fervent advocate for sustainability, environmental, and social justice issues. Currently a Ph.D. Candidate and serving as a Graduate Research Assistant at the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia, he has also been honored with the prestigious 2023 Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Award.
