SmartWay in the District

SmartWay logoAs a SmartWay® Affiliate, the District encourages freight industry participants such as retailers, manufacturers, distributors, private fleets, truck and rail carriers, and logistics providers to register in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) SmartWay Transport Partnership.

What is the SmartWay Transport Partnership?

SmartWay is EPA’s voluntary market-driven partnership to help businesses move goods in the cleanest and most fuel-efficient way possible.

  • SmartWay Saves Oil
  • SmartWay Saves Money and Supports U.S. Business Interests
  • SmartWay Protects U.S. Jobs and the Economy
  • Thousands of U.S. Businesses and Organizations Need SmartWay

See EPA’s Program Highlights for additional information.

What are the results of the SmartWay Transport Partnership?

SmartWay programs lower emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter (PM) by increasing the availability and market penetration of fuel efficient technologies and strategies that help freight companies save money while also reducing adverse environmental impacts.

See EPA’s Program Overview for additional information.

What does it mean to be a SmartWay Partner?

SmartWay Partners commit to measure and improve the efficiency of their freight operations.  EPA-developed tools are provided to quantify the partner’s environmental impact and track environmental performance over time.

In return, EPA promotes partners’ participation in the SmartWay program and provides incentives and technical assistance to facilitate the adoption of fuel efficiency improvements.

How do SmartWay Partnerships help the District?

The District is part of an ozone nonattainment area.  Over half of ozone-forming emissions generated in the District are from the transportation sector.  The transportation sector is also the second largest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions.  SmartWay Partners help reduce the amount of fuel burned, which reduces emissions of smog-forming pollutants that harm human health and greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.  Reducing the amount of fuel burned also strengthens the nation’s energy independence and cuts costs.

How can I become a SmartWay Partner?
