In 2016, DOEE’s Clean Water Construction Program (CWC) funded a green stormwater infrastructure retrofit project at Kalorama Park in Northwest DC. Kalorama Park is located in the Rock Creek Watershed.
This effort replaced 5,780 square feet of impermeable surface with permeable pavers. Permeable pavers are a self-draining system that allows rainwater to seep around individual pavers, soaking naturally into the ground underneath. If you are interested in installing permeable pavers at your residence, check out our permeable surface rebate program. This project also installed 2,110 square feet of engineered tree pits and planted eight large canopy trees. Trees reduce stormwater runoff while also improving air quality, creating shade, reducing the urban heat island effect, and providing habitat. The retrofits completed at Kalorama Park reduce stormwater runoff and pollution and improve the water quality in Rock Creek and the Potomac River for the benefit of District residents, visitors, wildlife and the environment.
In total, 6,800 square feet of impervious surface was removed from Kalorama Park. This project treats 9,791 gallons of stormwater per rain event from a contributing drainage area of 7,760 square feet.
Project Status: This project is now complete.
