Washington, DC – The third annual DC School Garden Week will take place October 5-10. All week, the public may take part in a variety of programs -- including school garden tours, a student photo contest and a forum on how to start a school garden. School gardens provide wildlife habitat, absorb stormwater runoff, beautify schoolyards, and nourish students' minds and bodies.

“Nobody is too young to learn about environmental awareness,” said George S. Hawkins, Director of the District Department of the Environment. “School Garden Week presents great educational opportunities for students, families and educators alike.”

The weeklong program kicks off with a garden planting at 10 a.m. Monday, October 5 at Watkins Elementary School, 420 12th Street, SE. On Saturday, October 10, the public is invited to a DC Schoolyards Tour that will showcase five school gardens with various teaching purposes.

DC School Garden Week is a program of the D.C. Environmental Education Consortium. For more information, including a schedule, please visit http://www.dcschoolyardgreening.org/dcschoolgardenweek.html
