“Green DC Day” Learn How to Save Energy, Protect the Environment and Find Green Jobs

Washington, DC –  The District Department of the Environment (DDOE) will host “Green DC Day/An Earth Day Celebration” on Wednesday, April 20, from 10am to 3pm on Freedom Plaza located between 13th and 14th Streets and Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.  This year, Earth Day is April 22.   DDOE is getting an early start with Earth Day activities by hosting 75 vendors that specialize in “Green” products and services.  Visitors will see demonstrations on low-cost ways to lower utility bills; how to identify, avoid or abate environmental hazards like engine idling, improper storm water management or lead contamination; drop off used cell phones for recycling; learn how to get Energy Star appliance rebates and financing for solar installations; sign up for the Bike Share program; maximize green landscaping; install a green roof; speak to several organizations and DDOE about how to get a green job and much more.   Local entertainers will be there as well.

“Having a Green DC Day is timely because with current escalating gas and utility costs, consumers are hungry for ways to save, conserve and be smart about protecting our environment,” said DDOE Director Christophe A.G. Tulou.  “We hope our outreach is successful to bring a large crowd because there will be a plethora of useful information and we are anxious for our residents to take advantage of it.”

Along with providing technical information, Green DC Day will start the morning off with two exciting announcements; Mayor Gray will distribute his annual Environmental Awards which acknowledge seven local businesses for their hard work and successes in being “Green”and Mayor Gray will announce the launch of the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DC SEU), with the prime contractor being the DC Sustainable Energy Partnership (DC SEP).  DC SEP will develop and operate numerous innovative energy efficiency programs that DC residents will be able to take advantage of starting May 24th.

Freedom Plaza is accessible by Metro bus and subway.  The Rain Date for Green DC Day is Thursday, April 21, same time, same location.  For more information visit ddoe.dc.gov.
