Agency Director & staff will provide free statehood-themed pollinator plant seeds at 17 Metro stations

WASHINGTON, DC – April 13, 2017 — On the morning before Earth Day, staff from the DOEE will again hand out pollinator plant seeds at 17 Metro stations across the District. In addition to encouraging residents to plant backyard habitats that enhance the survival of our native pollinators like bees and butterflies, this year’s giveaway has an added special theme: DC Statehood.

In support of the Bowser Administration’s efforts to make the District of Columbia the nation’s 51st state, this year’s batch of DOEE pollinator plant seeds will bloom into red Eastern Columbine and white Calico Aster flowers, emblemizing the stars and bars of the DC flag. Each packet contains enough seeds to cover a 6x6 foot area.

By growing pollinator plants, area residents can play a critical role in ensuring our native pollinator population continues to grow, an integral element of the District’s State Wildlife Action Plan. Even a small backyard garden or balcony with the appropriate native plants can support the pollinators that are crucial to the city’s overall ecosystem health.
