(Washington, DC) – On Friday, January 12, at 11 am, Mayor Bowser will kick off #YearOfTheAnacostia with major conservation and investment commitments in support of the Kingman Island and Heritage Island Planning and Feasibility Study.
Kingman and Heritage Islands represent a unique natural space in the heart of the nation’s capital. A product of dredging the Anacostia over 100 years ago, Kingman and Heritage Islands are now home to important and rare ecosystems, including tidal freshwater wetlands, vernal pools, wildflower meadows, and tidal swamp forests. There are more than 100 different species of birds, mammals, and other wildlife that call Kingman and Heritage Islands home. DC’s Department of Energy and Environment has been conducting weekly bird surveys on the islands for fifteen years, and has been working to restore the forests, wetlands, and meadows for the last five years.
