Building Energy Performance Standards

The District’s Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) is a key component towards the vision for a Sustainable DC: In just one generation – 20 years – the District will be the healthiest, greenest, most livable city for all residents.BEPs

  • 50% Reduction in greenhouse gases by 2032
  • Carbon Neutral by 2050
  • 50% Reduction in District-wide energy use by 2032

Building Energy Performance Standard (BEPS)

The Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) were set forth in Title III of the Clean Energy DC Omnibus Act of 2018. The Act states that, starting in 2021, owners of buildings over 50,000 square feet that are below a specific energy performance threshold will be required to improve their energy efficiency over the next 5 years. Projects below the performance threshold will be able to choose between a performance pathway, which requires that they document a 20% reduction in energy usage over the 5 year compliance period, or a prescriptive list of required energy efficiency measures.

These requirements build upon the success of the District’s Energy Benchmarking program, which has been collecting energy and water performance data on properties over 50,000 square feet since 2013.
