Project Status: The Watts Branch Stream Restoration Project was completed in 2012.

Project Overview:

DOEE along with the Department of Parks and Recreation, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and the Natural Resource Conservation Service partnered and executed a 1.7 mile long stream restoration project at Watts Branch in Northeast DC. The restoration project Nash Runutilized natural channel designs which focus on creating a channel that will remain stable in high flows and provide areas for instream habitat such as pools and riffles. The stream restoration project was completed in 2012 and in total 2976 native trees, 7475 native shrubs, and 6231 native live stakes were planted in the project area.

The USFWS along with Michael Baker, Inc., led the stream designs for the project and Environmental Quality Resources constructed the restoration project.

Project Objectives:

  1. Reduce streambank erosion and channel bed incision to provide long-term stream stability and downstream water quality benefits;
  2. Protect the sanitary sewer lines; and
  3. Improve in-stream and riparian habitat conditions.
