2023 DOEE Student Air Quality - Art & Comic Contest

DOEE invites 9th - 12th graders attending a public high school or public charter high school in the District to submit 2-D artwork that celebrates and portrays a clean air future in the District.

Contest winners will be selected for the following 5 categories:

  • Best Comic
  • Best Artwork
  • 2nd Place
  • 3rd Place
  • 8 Honorable Mentions
    (one from a person living in each District Ward)

Artwork is due by 11:59 pm on Monday, July 31, 2023. Winners will be announced in August 2023; more information to come.

Art or Comic Overall Theme: How can we work together to keep the District's air clean?

Topics you may focus on in your art or comic:

  • Air Quality & Transportation
  • Air Quality & Climate Change
  • Asthma & Your Health
  • Community Science
  • Wildfires & Smoke

GUIDELINES & SPECIFICATIONS 

Winners will be selected for the following categories and receive a gift card (of their choosing) in the following amounts: 

  • Best Comic- $200 

  • Best Artwork- $200 

  • 2nd Place- $125 

  • 3rd Place- $75 

  • 8 Honorable Mentions (one from each District Ward) will be selected and have their artwork displayed on social media and in the Health Homes Branch’s calendar. 

The winner will be chosen based on: 

  • Relevance and appropriateness of the message, as determined by the contest judges 

  • Adherence to the theme, “How can we work together to keep the District's air clean?”  

  • Incorporating one of the following topics:

    • Air Quality & Transportation 

    • Air Quality & Climate Change 

    • Asthma & Your Health 

    • Community Science 

    • Wildfires & Smoke  

  •  Visual design, as determined by the contest judges 

ARTWORK SPECIFICATIONS 

Artwork may be featured in bus ads so artwork should be in a more horizontal rectangular shape. 

  • Artwork must be oriented in landscape format (horizontally) 

  • Recommended uploading shape 11" x 17", or 1056 pixels x 1632 pixels 

  • Save as JPG, PNG, PDF or BMP at maximum quality in RGB mode 

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS 

  1. Only one entry per student is allowed and all submissions must be made via the submission dropbox link. Teachers may submit artwork on behalf of their students through the submission form, but should include permission from a parent or guardian with the Dropbox art submission.  

  2. All participants must fill out the online permission form with each submission; this serves as a signed permission form. Your submission will not be considered without submission of the form. Please fill out the form at: https://forms.office.com/g/EcpcEz4Krr

  3. Submissions from artists who are over 18 do not need a parent’s signature.  

  4. Please retain the original artwork for a public showcase in August 2023.

LEGAL TERMS 

By submitting a photograph, image, graphic, or comic (collectively the “work”) you hereby agree to the following: 

  • You certify and warrant that you are the legal guardian of the minor who is submitting the artwork or are the artist and are legally an adult. 

  • You certify and warrant that the work is your work or your child’s own original creative work and does not violate or infringe the copyright or other proprietary or intellectual property rights of others. 

  • You retain all copyright and equivalent rights but grant permission for the DC Government and DC Department of Energy and Environment to use, reproduce, distribute, and/or release the work to the public in any manner and in any medium without payment of any fee, and in perpetuity. 

  • The DC Government and DC Department of Energy and Environment reserves the right to use contestants' names and works for educational publicity and/or promotional purposes, including website, a calendar, or exhibition of winning entries. You understand that the works will be shared with reporters covering these awards and for promotion of the competition itself. 

  • You hereby give the DC Government and DC Department of Energy and Environment nonexclusive rights to use yours or your child’s name, likenesses, quotes and submissions for educational publicity and/or promotional purposes. This includes but is not limited to website display, print materials, social media, and exhibits. 

  • You hereby agree to indemnify the DC Government and DC Department of Energy and Environment, its officers, agents, and employees, from any and all claims, demands, and liabilities (including attorneys’ fees) incurred as a result of a final judgment or settlement or any claim or legal proceeding arising out of or resulting from a breach or claimed breach of the foregoing representations and warranties.
