Anacostia River Explorers

Free Educational Boat Tours to Begin in April

WASHINGTON, DC – March 23, 2016 — The Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) announced the launch of its newest program, Anacostia River Explorers. Anacostia River Explorers offers area residents of all ages the opportunity to engage directly with the Anacostia River and local wildlife through free, guided boat tours. These educational tours will provide an overview of the river’s history, associated wildlife, environmental threats, and will highlight initiatives the District is undergoing to restore and protect one of the city’s two major waterways.

“We’re thrilled to provide residents with the means to create meaningful connections with our urban, natural environment through hands-on experience,” said DOEE Director Tommy Wells. “These educational boat tours will teach our residents about local wildlife—like bald eagles, frogs, and turtles—as they discover the river’s rich history, the threats it faces, and the innovative solutions we continue to implement to restore the river’s health for generations to come.”

Tours will be offered in one or two-hour options and will be conducted on motorized boats or canoes. The program is funded by the Anacostia River Clean Up and Protection Fund and participation is open to anyone, no matter their age, ability, or language—increasing accessibility to the river for residents in all eight wards. Tours launch from several locations along the Anacostia River, and are available to public and private groups.  Special arrangements may be required for minors (K – 12), individuals with disabilities, and participants needing translation services.
