Community solar at Oxon Run is live!
The community solar farm at Oxon Run is an innovative use of a degraded 15 acre brownfield site along South Capitol Street, SW in Ward 8. A total of 2.65 megawatts of clean, solar energy capacity was brought online in December, 2020. The system delivers free electricity (offsetting $500 annually) to approximately 750 households in the surrounding community. As of February 2021, the facility is the largest community solar system in the District.
The installation is a low-impact site design that safely, cleanly and silently produces renewable electricity. Ongoing site development includes restoration of native pollinator plantings, planting of pollinator meadows, and native plant and shrub landscaping throughout.
In 2017, DGS, in partnership with DOEE, contracted GRID Alternatives Mid-Atlantic to design and build the facility. GRID provided project management for site civil engineering, environmental, and survey services for project. Subscription management is provided by DOEE and a non-profit grantee, Groundswell. Site management and maintenance is provided by DGS and Lightbox.
