DC Council Committee on Transportation and the Environment

is responsible for overseeing DOEE’s performance and budget. Community members can sign-up to testify to give feedback or recommendations in matters regarding urban agriculture or other environmental issues. Learn More>>

DC Council of Governments (COG)

develops a regional list of farmers offering Community Supported Agriculture shares (CSAs) to our region’s residents, supports urban agriculture through their Urban Forestry Program, Green Infrastructure Program and seeks to provide information on the current and historical state of agriculture in the District. District Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE)

offers a four-part training series designed for those with no or limited grant writing experience to learn how to develop a grant application and submit an effective response to DOEE’s request for applications (RFA). New grant writers are encouraged to view this training. Learn More>>

DC Food Policy Council

is a coalition of food leaders and government representatives appointed by Mayor Muriel Bowser to drive policy towards a more equitable, healthy, and sustainable food system in the District. Meetings are once a month. Learn More>> 

Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR)

offers community growing spaces, free workshops and courses focused on practical urban gardening skills, environmental stewardship and nutrition/cooking education during various time frames throughout the year at their Community Gardens, Communal and Partner Farms. Learn More>>

DUG Network

offers a bi-weekly newsletter that highlight events, classes, announcements, job openings, grants and more about urban agriculture, food access, and environmental justice in the DMV. Learn More>>

UDC - Center for Urban Agriculture & Gardening Education

provides academic and public knowledge of sustainable urban agriculture through the administration of food hubs and urban farms, providing virtual workshops, and providing education programs and certificates. Learn More>>

UDC - College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainablity, & Environmental Sciences

offers academic programs in urban architecture and community development, urban sustainability, health education, nursing, and nutrition and dietetics. Learn More>>

United States Botanic Garden (USBG)

supports urban ag in the District by promoting science, environmental learning, health and well-being in urban communities by increasing food access through local food production; and fostering community engagement through meaningful connections with food and agriculture. Learn More>>

US Department of Agriculture (USDA)

supports farming initiatives in DC by providing on-farm guidance and innovation knowledge, marketing and selling insights, professional steps to starting, financing, and protecting your farm or garden, as well as programs for urban growers like the Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production Grant.  Learn More>>

US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

encourages communities that want to transform a property into urban agriculture to assess it for environmental contaminants to identify potential risks to public health and the environment. EPA’s Brownfields Program offers grant funding and technical assistance that can help communities assess and clean up a property proposed for a community garden or urban farm. Learn More>>

Sustainable DC logoUrban Agriculture advances the following Sustainable DC 2.0 goals and actions:

  • Adding 20 additional acres of land into cultivation for growing food by 2032
  • Developing food producing landscaping on 5 acres of District public spaces throughout all 8 wards
  • Developing and supporting school gardens and garden based food systems
  • Education to engage DCPS and charter school students
