Anacostia Environmental Youth Summit

For students in grades 4-8 and their teachers.

The Anacostia Environmental Youth Summit is a city-wide showcase that spotlights youth voice, demonstrates environmental literacy, and encourages stewardship for the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.

By exemplifying an ethic of stewardship and responsible action, the Anacostia Environmental Youth Summit emphasizes youth leadership and innovation. Each year, approximately 400 District students are invited to attend this outdoor event, where they interact with environmental educators from numerous public and private organizations and engage in hands-on learning experiences.

In 2019, the following exciting presentations are planned:

  • Citizen science BioBlitz activity
  • Student presentations for the Caring for Our Watershed competition
  • Interpretive boat rides on the Anacostia River
  • More than 20 environmental activity stations

All activities support the following science standards:

  • 4.7.10.  Investigate the Chesapeake Bay watershed and wetlands, and describe how they support a wide variety of plant and animal life that interact with other living and nonliving things.
  • 5.12.2.  Identify organisms that are not native to the Washington, DC, area and how they undergo changes to increase their chance of survival in the area.
  • 6.6.7.  Describe that most rainwater that falls in Washington, DC, will eventually drain into the Chesapeake Bay.
  • 7.8.1.  Recognize that in all environments, such as freshwater, marine, forest, desert, grassland, mountain, farms, cities, and others, organisms with similar needs and living strategies compete with one another for resources, including food, space, water, air, and shelter.

The Anacostia Environmental Youth Summit is a partnership effort among DOEE, the US Environmental Protection Agency/Chesapeake Bay Program, Anacostia Watershed Society, DC Environmental Education Consortium Earth Force, and many public and private environmental organizations and a number of community-based organizations.
