The DC Flood Risk Tool helps residents, design professionals, and developers identify the potential flood impacts of a particular site. The tool offers an interactive map that displays multiple types of flooding throughout the District. The map includes layers of FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), DC’s Integrated Flood Model (IFM) maps, storm surge, and sea level rise. Additional map layers are available under the Flood (Advanced), Socioeconomic, Infrastructure, and Political categories and may be activated as needed.
Users may begin exploring flood risk by entering an address or selecting a location directly on the map.
The tool has a number of other features that include:
Current & Forecast Flood Risk
-
Use the tabs at the top of the site to see Current or Forecast flood risk along the Potomac and Anacostia rivers. Current conditions display real-time water levels, while the Forecast tab provides modeled conditions for the next 72 hours. Selecting a river gage (shown as red dots) opens detailed water level information and displays the corresponding inundation map for that segment of the river.
Building Flood Risk Analysis
-
Click on a red building outline and then click “Analyze Building.” Fill out the building characteristics to receive the structure’s estimated structural loss calculation for a 100-year flood event. Click “Print Report” to receive a PDF of the report.
Flood Alert Notifications
-
For buildings along the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers, click on a red building outline, click “Create Notification,” and enter your information. Notifications are issued when forecasted flooding is expected to affect the selected structure, allowing residents and property owners to prepare for a flood before it happens.
Flood Events & Submit a Story
-
Use the Flood Events tab at the top of the site to see information about past flood events in DC. Click the Submit a Story button to provide DOEE with information and pictures about a flood that you have experienced.
