  • Community Walk for Air Quality Awareness on May 8, 2026 
    AQD held a guided walk in Eckington. This interactive event offered residents an opportunity to learn more about local air quality while engaging directly with DOEE experts. During the walk, DOEE staff, including air quality managers, inspectors, and technical personnel, demonstrated the use of handheld air quality monitors and a nasal ranger, a specialized device used to measure ambient odor strength. Participants were encouraged to ask questions, share concerns, and gain a deeper understanding of how air quality is monitored and managed in their community.
     
  • Air Quality Monitoring Park Bench Ribbon Cutting Ceremony (Ward 8) on May 7, 2026
    We hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the installation of new solar-powered air quality monitoring benches in the District. These innovative benches, now located in Wards 4, 5, 7, and 8, were installed based on recommendations from community members and air quality experts. Each bench is equipped with real-time air monitoring technology, providing valuable environmental data to help residents better understand the air they breathe. During the event, attendees learned about the purpose and benefits of the benches, receive guidance on how to access and interpret the data collected, and had the opportunity to engage directly with DOEE staff.

  • Clearing the Air: The Year in Review on May 6, 2026 
    DOEE’s Air Quality Division has been working hard all year to keep our air clean and protect your health! As part of Air Quality Awareness Week (May 4th – May 8th), we hosted a virtual meeting so residents could learn more about our recent activities, like the installation of our low-cost sensor network and engine idling enforcement. We also provided details on our current and upcoming activities and answer your questions.
  • Clearing the Air: Enhanced Air Quality Monitoring in Ward 8 on April 9, 2026 at 5:30pm (virtual)
    The District's ambient air quality monitor in Ward 8 turned 2 and we held a community meeting to celebrate! We talked about the latest installed measuring instruments and provided a first look at two years of data and a walk down memory lane to understand the history of this site, including how we chose the location.
  • Clearing the Air Webinar: Ft. Myer Asphalt Plant 1 Air Quality Permit on Thursday, January 15, 2026 at 5:30pm (virtual)
    During this meeting, we discussed the Ft. Myer Construction Corporation Asphalt Plant 1 Air Quality Permit. DOEE provided an overview of the new permit and changes from the previous permit. We also talked about our other air quality-related activities in the area.
  • Clearing the Air Webinar: Improving DC's Air Quality with VW Settlement Funds on Wednesday, November 5 at 5:30pm (virtual)
    During this meeting, we explained the Volkswagen Settlement money that the District received and how it can be spent. We also gave an update on our projects to reduce diesel emissions, discussed our future plans and answered questions.

  • Clearing the Air Webinar: The Year in the District's Air on Tuesday, May 5, 2025
    During this meeting, we provided an overview of DOEE’s Air Quality Division's recent activities and our plans for the rest of the year.
  • Open House: Takoma Recreation Center Monitoring Station on Wednesday, May 7, 2025
    Location: Takoma Recreation Center Monitoring Station, 300 Van Buren St. NW
    We opened one of our stationary monitors to the public to show District residents a little about what our air quality monitoring team does every day. Visitors had the chance to learn about the air quality monitoring equipment and speak to members of our monitoring team.
     
  • Online Showing of Idle Warriors Short Documentary on Thursday, May 8, 2025
    We screened a documentary about a small group of active residents in New York City who submit many of the city’s engine idling complaints. They call themselves Idle Warriors. The film dives into the motivations that drive these environmental bounty hunters as they track tailpipe exhaust, while shedding light on the broader health and environmental issues connected to car idling and emissions. After the film, we had a discussion with the director, Molly Stark-Ragsdale, and provided an overview of the District’s engine idling enforcement program.
     
  • Clearing the Air Community Workshop Series
    Clearing the Air Workshops are an opportunity for the public to learn about DOEE's Air Quality Division. During these sessions we'll cover everything from the science of air pollution to the laws and regulations that protect our health from harmful emissions. Recordings of past events and notifications of upcoming events are available.
  • Open House: Anacostia Freeway Near Road Station Air Monitor on Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 10:00am-12:00pm
    Location: Near Road Air Monitor Station, 3621 Benning Road Northeast
    We opened one of our stationary monitors to the public to show District residents a little about what our air quality monitoring team does every day. The Anacostia Freeway Near-Road monitoring station measures nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and PM 2.5 and is right next to I-295. Visitors had the chance to learn about the air quality monitoring equipment and speak to members of our monitoring team.

  • Clearing the Air: an Overview of DC's Air Monitoring Initiatives on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at 5:00pm (virtual)
    DOEE gave an overview of what we’ve been doing this year, like recent rulemakings and our hypermobile monitoring project, and provided info on our current and upcoming activities.
  • Ribbon Cutting: Ward 8 Air Quality Monitor on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 3:00pm
    Location: Bald Eagle Recreation Center, 100 Joliet Street Washington, DC 20032
    The District has a new ambient air monitor at the Bald Eagle Rec Center, our first in Ward 8! DOEE held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for this monitor with our Director, Richard Jackson. Brenda Richardson, Coordinator of the Anacostia Parks & Community Collaborative and Dr. Amber A. Hewitt, Chief Equity Officer for the District Government, also provided remarks at the event.

  • Community Meeting: Soliciting Input on Upcoming Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Project with Aclima (Phase II) on Thursday, April 4, 2024 at 4:00pm
    DOEE provided an overview of our upcoming mobile air quality monitoring project and requested public feedback on areas to focus on within the neighborhoods already designated for the project. The Air Quality Division is accepting feedback on the project through April 19th.
  • Informational Session on the New Draft Air Quality Permit for Fort Myer Construction Corporation on March 6, 2024
    DOEE provided an overview of the new draft permit for Fort Myer Construction Corporation’s existing asphalt plant at 2001 5th Street NE, and how the requirements of this draft permit differ from the last permit. DOEE also informed participants on how District residents can provide public comment on the draft permit.
