Each year, approximately 400 District students attend the Anacostia Environmental Youth Summit. At this FREE outdoor event students interact with environmental educators from numerous public and private organizations and engage in hands-on learning experiences including Citizen Science BioBlitz and interpretive boat rides on the Anacostia River.

NEW this year – Anacostia Park Design Competition!

Did you know that Anacostia Park is a National Park? It is more than 100 years old and is visited by people from all around the world. Now’s the chance to share your vision for Anacostia Park! ARE YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE?

DOEE and the Friends of Anacostia Park invite 4th – 8th graders to participate in the Anacostia Park Design Competition to come up with ideas for how to make Anacostia Park better. Students will have the opportunity to compete against their peers from around the District at the Anacostia Environmental Youth Summit. Participating schools will also receive priority for a boat tour during the Summit, and prizes will be awarded to the winning team!

Follow the steps outlined in the Anacostia Park Design Competition Toolkit (attached below) to design a portion of Anacostia Park to become an amazing, beautiful, and sustainable park. The winning design will provide helpful ideas for DOEE and the National Park Service to consider.

Need additional park design support?
Participating schools are eligible to receive in-classroom technical and design assistance from DOEE staff and partners. Schools are also invited to submit draft designs by April 24, 2023 to DOEE for feedback and suggestions.

All activities support the following science standards:

• 4.7.10. Investigate the Chesapeake Bay watershed and wetlands, and describe how they support a wide variety of plant and animal life that interact with other living and nonliving things.
• 5.12.2. Identify organisms that are not native to the Washington, DC, area and how they undergo changes to increase their chance of survival in the area.
• 6.6.7. Describe that most rainwater that falls in Washington, DC, will eventually drain into the Chesapeake Bay.
• 7.8.1. Recognize that in all environments, such as freshwater, marine, forest, desert, grassland, mountain, farms, cities, and others, organisms with similar needs and living strategies compete with one another for resources, including food, space, water, air, and shelter.

The Anacostia Environmental Youth Summit is a partnership effort among DOEE, Friends of Anacostia Park, the US Environmental Protection Agency/Chesapeake Bay Program, National Parks Service, DC Environmental Education Consortium, and many public and private environmental organizations and a number of community-based organizations.
